Rubber Bands (State IV) (2017) takes the series to its furthest point of dissolution. The seven-line sentence occupies the same vertical format as States I and II, but here the letterforms have lost their outlines entirely — the text rendered in the palest possible pink against the ochre ground, the words present as colour,, legible only if you already know what they say. RUBBER / BANDS / STRETCH / REAL FAR / UNTIL / THEY / DON'T: the sentence is still there, but only just.

Across the three states in the Cassian collection — I, II, and IV — the series traces a single trajectory: the gradual withdrawal of the inscription from the surface it occupies. State I holds the text in hollow outlined pink, close to its ground but still structured. State II delivers it in cool aqua against cream, the clearest and most atmospheric of the three. State IV completes the arc, the sentence at the point of disappearance, the colour barely distinguishable from the field it floats within. The rubber band, which stretches real far until it doesn't, has here stretched as far as it can go without the sentence ceasing to exist altogether.

That logic — of serial refinement taken to an extreme — connects to Ruscha's broader interest in systems and their limits, the question of how far a single proposition can be extended before it exhausts itself or transforms into something else. He had been working serially since his first artist books in the early 1960s, returning to the same subjects — petrol stations, swimming pools, parking lots, the Standard Station — across decades of prints and paintings.
