    Jean-Michel Basquiat Prints For Sale

Basquiat Estate Prints, Lifetime Editions & Original Artworks

Jean-Michel Basquiat fused graffiti, poetry, anatomy, jazz and African-American history into one of the most influential artistic practices of the late twentieth century. Emerging from New York’s downtown scene under the name SAMO during the late 1970s, Basquiat developed a world built from crowns, skeletal figures, fragmented language, anatomical studies and references drawn from music, sport, politics and art history. Urgent, intellectual and instantly recognisable, his work continues to shape both contemporary painting and the global art market decades after his death in 1988.

Alex Yellop, London advise collectors internationally across Jean-Michel Basquiat art for sale — including estate-authorised screenprints, signed works on paper, paintings and rare editions across the artist’s most important series and portfolios.

  • Jean-Michel Basquiat — From SAMO to Artworld Stardom

    LANGUAGE. ANATOMY. POWER

Jean-Michel Basquiat is among the most important American artists of the late twentieth century and one of the defining figures of the contemporary market. Born in Brooklyn in 1960 to Haitian and Puerto Rican parents, Basquiat developed an artistic language that fused graffiti, poetry, anatomy, jazz, sport and art history into a body of work unlike anything produced in New York during the 1980s. Though his career lasted little more than a decade, his paintings, drawings and prints permanently reshaped the relationship between street culture, contemporary painting and the global art market.

Before international recognition came SAMO. During the late 1970s, Basquiat and Al Diaz began painting cryptic texts and epigrams across Lower Manhattan under the tag “SAMO” — shorthand for “Same Old Shit.” The phrases were sharp, political and often darkly humorous, appearing across subway stations, storefronts and downtown walls before attracting wider attention through the Village Voice and New York’s emerging alternative art scene. By the early 1980s Basquiat was exhibiting alongside artists including Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Jenny Holzer, while rapidly becoming one of the youngest artists ever included in both Documenta and the Whitney Biennial.

His paintings and works on paper combined skeletal figures, fragmented language, anatomical studies, crowns, crosses and references to Black history, jazz musicians, boxing and classical drawing into dense, layered compositions that remain immediately recognisable today. Across both paintings and prints, Basquiat repeatedly returned to themes of power, identity, mortality, fame and exploitation, producing works that continue to resonate far beyond the period in which they were made.

Basquiat died in 1988 at the age of 27, yet his market has continued to strengthen dramatically in the decades since. Major paintings now rank among the most valuable works in contemporary art, while estate editions, signed works on paper and complete portfolios remain central to the international Basquiat market today.

Alex Yellop specialise in Jean-Michel Basquiat prints, estate editions and works on paper spanning the artist’s most important series and portfolios, with expertise across rare editions, complete portfolios and significant works from the wider Basquiat market.

Collecting Jean-Michel Basquiat art centres around several distinct areas of the market, including rare lifetime prints, estate editions, works on paper and major original paintings. • Basquiat Signed Prints For Sale

    Hand-Signed Lifetime Prints

    Produced During The Artist's Lifetime

Basquiat produced a relatively small number of prints during his lifetime, and signed examples from this period remain among the rarest and most sought-after works in the wider Basquiat market. Portfolios including Anatomy, Leonardo and Back of the Neck are considered some of the most important printed works associated with the artist, combining the immediacy of his draftsmanship with the same anatomical studies, fragmented text and symbolic imagery that defined his paintings and works on paper.

  • Jean-Michel Basquiat Estate Prints For sale

    Estate Prints

    Released by The Basquiat Estate

Basquiat estate editions introduced some of the artist’s most recognisable imagery into the print market following his death in 1988. Published in carefully controlled editions and authorised by the Basquiat Estate, these works draw directly from major paintings, drawings and works on paper produced during the most important years of his career. Series including Portfolio I, Portfolio II and the Daros Suite brought Basquiat’s crowns, skeletal figures, anatomical studies and layered text into editioned form, creating a category of works that remains central to the wider Basquiat market today.

Unlike the rare lifetime prints, estate editions exist within a broader and more internationally traded market, with collector demand tending to concentrate around the strongest imagery, complete portfolios and historically important compositions.

  • Basquiat Works On Paper For Sale

Works on Paper & Original Paintings

    Unique Works

Basquiat's original paintings and works on paper represent the most significant and valuable category of his output. Working in acrylic, oil stick, spray paint and collage, he produced a body of unique works that permanently reshaped contemporary painting during the 1980s. While certain subjects moved between painting, drawing and print, many of Basquiat's most important compositions exist exclusively as unique canvases and major works on paper.

Record-breaking auction results have reinforced Basquiat's position among the most valuable artists in the contemporary market. Untitled (1982) achieved over $110 million (£81 million) at Sotheby's New York in 2017, while El Gran Espectaculo (The Nile) realised over $67 million (£49.3 million) at Christie's in 2023, demonstrating continued international demand for major works from Basquiat's most important years. Large-scale paintings combining skeletal imagery, crowns, fragmented text and anatomical references remain among the most closely contested works in contemporary art whenever they appear publicly.
