Real Deal by Ed Ruscha (2014) is a diptych in which each word gets its own vertical panel — REAL on the left, DEAL on the right — and within each panel the letters cascade in descending scale from top to bottom. On the left, R is enormous at the top, E and A mid-sized, L small at the base. The right panel mirrors the logic: D at the top nearly full height, E and A shrinking, L landing at the bottom edge. The letters are white against a pale grey-blue ground, rendered with soft dimensional shadows that give them a quiet sculptural presence. The gap between the two panels is the work's hinge.
The scaling is the move nobody mentions. REAL DEAL is typically delivered at full volume — the phrase carries the confidence of someone who needs you to know they are not selling you something inferior. Here each word diminishes as it descends, the letters losing scale as they accumulate, so that by the time you reach the final L of DEAL the phrase has quietly talked itself down from its opening claim. The assertion starts large and arrives small.
Ruscha had always been interested in the gap between what American commercial language promises and what it delivers, and Real Deal positions that gap structurally. The diptych format requires the viewer to read across a physical break, the white space between the panels introducing a pause that the phrase, in ordinary usage, would never permit. REAL and DEAL, separated, become two words rather than one expression — each one examined briefly on its own terms before the mind reassembles them.
Produced as a flat bite etching in an edition of forty, it is among the most formally inventive works in the collection — a print that makes its argument through typography alone, without a single word of explanation.
