Listen if You Ever Tell (2007) presents a grid of white rectangles against a densely worked grey ground — twenty forms in total, arranged in five rows across the vertical format, each one a blank white opening in the textured field. The ground has the quality of woven fabric or fine mesh, the grey dense and consistent, the white rectangles clean and empty. At the base of the sheet, small text carries the title and edition information. The image contains no imagery whatsoever — only the structure that imagery would occupy.
The grid reads immediately as a contact sheet, the format a photographer uses to review an entire roll of film before selecting which frames to enlarge. Ruscha had built his early reputation on photography used as a neutral collecting device — Twentysix Gasoline Stations, Every Building on the Sunset Strip, Nine Swimming Pools — the camera treated as a tool for gathering. A contact sheet is that process made visible: all the frames together, unedited, the whole roll present before selection and cropping remove most of it. Listen if You Ever Tell gives you the contact sheet with every frame blank, the structure of photographic selection without any of its content.
The title sits against that emptiness with considerable force. LISTEN IF YOU EVER TELL is a conditional warning — the kind of phrase spoken quietly, the kind that implies something has already happened that cannot be undone and must not be repeated. It carries the register of a confidence shared under duress, a secret that has already cost something. Against a grid of blank frames, suggesting not just absent images but deliberately absent images — photographs that were taken and suppressed, or never taken precisely because of what they would have shown. The twenty empty rectangles become not blank but redacted, the structure of disclosure with the disclosure removed.
