Tires by Ed Ruscha shows the upper corner of a white commercial building against a dark, heavily worked sky — storm clouds massing in deep grey and black behind the structure, the building itself bright white, TIRES painted on the side wall in plain block capitals. The composition crops the building at its roofline and left edge, giving it a monumental quality that its actual scale would never justify. A dark opening at the lower left suggests a garage bay. The sky presses down on the structure from above, dramatic and indifferent.

The Archi-Props series, of which Tires is one of the more atmospherically charged works, catalogued the commercial architecture of Los Angeles with the attentiveness Ruscha had developed across thirty years of looking at the American built environment. Where Upholstery gave a shopfront facade, and Library gave a civic building in flat afternoon light, Tires introduces weather — the sky here is doing something that the other Archi-Props works deliberately avoid, the storm clouds giving the simple white building a tension its function does not warrant. A tyre shop under a threatening sky is still a tyre shop. But it is also, in this rendering, something closer to a structure holding its ground against forces larger than itself.

TIRES is the kind of word that appears on buildings across America without anyone deciding to put it there — the trade name that doubles as the entire description of what happens inside, the commercial signage reduced to its minimum necessary information. Ruscha had been interested in exactly this quality of American vernacular typography since the 1960s, the way a single word painted on a wall could carry the full weight of an enterprise, a neighbourhood, an economy. Produced as a lithograph in 1993 in an edition of twenty, Tires is among the most visually dramatic works in the Archi-Props portfolio — a print that finds genuine atmosphere in a subject that has no interest in providing any.
