The Daros Suite by Jean-Michel Basquiat is a four-part portfolio — Ascent, Olympic, Leeches, and Liberty — produced in an edition of 50 on Somerset paper. Across the four works, Basquiat moves between philosophy, economics, anatomy, and colonial history, building surfaces so dense with text, symbol, and figure that each sheet reads less like a composition than a field of accumulated thought.

The specific content of each work is inseparable from its meaning. Ascent layers references to Plotinus, John the Revelator, and the pairing of FLESH and SPIRIT across a saturated blue ground — the idea of elevation fractured by competing registers of the spiritual and the physical. Olympic deploys the language of soap advertising and commercial branding — TRICK BLACK SOAP, prices, a crowned orange figure — to expose competition as a system of exchange rather than merit. Leeches crowds its surface with parasites, fleas, boric acid, and a dissected anatomical head, the body positioned as something acted upon by external forces. Liberty moves through Federal Reserve notes, PETROL, asbestos, lead, and salivary glands, collapsing the economic and the biological into a single, unresolved field.

By 1982 Basquiat had moved from the walls of the Lower East Side to the centre of the New York art world with a speed that had no real precedent. The Daros Suite reflects the full range of what he was doing at that moment — absorbing jazz, medical texts, colonial history, and street language simultaneously, and refusing to separate them. Words are written, crossed out, and rewritten; figures emerge and dissolve; systems of knowledge are assembled and immediately destabilised.

Basquiat died in 1988 at twenty-seven. The suite was issued in 2017 by his Estate, nearly three decades after his death — by which point his position in the history of postwar art was beyond dispute, and works of this density and specificity had become exceptionally rare in private hands.
