Jean-Michel Basquiat

Jean-Michel Basquiat's Boxer Rebellion is one of his most historically loaded works — Sugar Ray Robinson's name crossed out in the upper left, the opening verses of Genesis written across the top, CHINESE ANIMATION struck through to become (BOXER) REBELLION©, and at the base PANAVISION and TECHNICOLOR sitting alongside JAPAN, LOANS, and PER CAPITA. The image moves between scripture, sport, colonial history, and Hollywood production without pausing to explain the connections.
Boxing was never simply sport for Basquiat — it was a lens through which race, labour, and exploitation could be examined directly. Sugar Ray Robinson, one of the most technically gifted fighters in history, embodied what Basquiat returned to repeatedly: the Black athlete celebrated for physical performance while the economic structures around him extracted the value of that performance for others. To cross out Robinson's name is not to erase him but to mark the erasure that had already occurred — the same operation Basquiat applied to words throughout his career, drawing attention to suppression by making it visible.
What makes Boxer Rebellion characteristic of Basquiat at his most concentrated is the way every mark carries equal weight — handwritten text sits alongside schematic figures, anatomical notation, Japanese characters, and crossed-out phrases, none elevated above the others, the whole image structured like a mind working at full speed across multiple registers simultaneously. He had developed this approach through his years as SAMO, where the walls of downtown Manhattan were both sketchbook and broadcast — a way of putting complex ideas into public space in a form that rewarded sustained attention. The collision of the 1899 Chinese uprising against foreign imperial presence with Robinson, Genesis, and Hollywood production is not collage for its own sake but a precise argument: that extraction, resistance, and the ownership of narrative are the same story told in different centuries.
