Riddle Me This, from the Superhero Portfolio by Jean-Michel Basquiat fills its upper half with laughter — HA HA HA HEE HO repeated until it becomes texture rather than sound, crowding out everything else before the eye reaches the figures below. The Riddler and the Joker stand at the centre, rendered with enough fidelity to be recognisable and enough distortion to make the recognition feel unstable. NOTHING TO BE GAINED HERE appears twice. COWARDS WILL GIVE TO GET RID OF YOU. At the base, TIZOL — Juan Tizol, the Puerto Rican trombonist who spent decades playing in Duke Ellington's orchestra, contributing compositions including Caravan and Perdido, and remaining largely uncredited in the popular account of the music he helped make.
Tizol's name in the middle of a work about comic book villains and compulsive laughter is not incidental. Basquiat's mother was Puerto Rican, and Tizol represented something Basquiat understood intimately — the figure whose talent enriches an institution that does not fully claim him, present in the work but missing from the story. Jazz ran through Basquiat's output as both subject and structural model — the speed, the layering, the refusal to resolve — and the musicians he returned to were consistently those whose contributions had been absorbed by a culture that credited them selectively. Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis appear across his paintings as crowns without heads, named and elevated because the record had failed to do it adequately.
The villains of the DC universe were the characters who had seen through the mythology — who knew that the system rewarding the hero was the same system producing the conditions that made villains necessary. NOTHING TO BE GAINED HERE is not resignation, it is clarity, and the laughter that surrounds it never resolves into a joke. It accumulates until it stops being funny, the HA HA HA becoming something closer to the sound a person makes when the situation is genuinely beyond response. Basquiat had been navigating that situation since he first entered the art world — celebrated, examined, and categorised by institutions whose logic his work was simultaneously dismantling.
