Untitled 5, from the Figure Portfolio by Jean-Michel Basquiat is the most architecturally grounded work in the series — a single figure in orange and yellow, cross-hatched and grid-structured, standing against an image that includes what is unmistakably a city block, its windows drawn with the same graphic economy Basquiat brought to everything else. The figure's right arm extends into a long sinuous curve that trails behind it, a black bird to its left, the surrounding image dense with teal, red, and blue marks pressing in from all sides.

The building in the upper left corner is not incidental. Basquiat grew up in Brooklyn and the architecture of that upbringing — the housing blocks, the street grids, the urban infrastructure that shaped the conditions of daily life for the communities he came from — runs through his work as a persistent undercurrent rather than an explicit subject. To place a figure this colourful and this energetically drawn against that backdrop is to make a quiet argument about context: that the figure exists within and against a built environment that was not designed with it in mind.

By 1982, when the original work was made, Basquiat had moved from sleeping rough and making art in whatever spaces were available to him to working in studios in SoHo and later on Crosby Street, the trajectory from street to gallery compressed into barely three years. The Figure Portfolio, taken as a whole, is a record of what that figure looked like at the moment of that transition — present, insistent, surrounded by the marks of everything it had absorbed and everything it was still moving through. Untitled 5 closes the series with its figure still mid-gesture, arm raised, the city behind it, the numbers at the base counting forward.
