Undiscovered Genius of the Mississippi Delta by Jean-Michel Basquiat places a single bluesman at the centre of an image that maps the entire cultural and economic geography that produced him — the Atlantic slave trade, Africa, the Mississippi Delta, the griot tradition, the Faustian mythology of the blues, and the question of who gets credited for what they make. The figure stands with his guitar, surrounded by a world that both created him and erased him.

The blues was the foundational music of the twentieth century — the source from which jazz, rock and roll, rhythm and blues, and eventually hip hop all drew — and its creators were systematically uncredited, underpaid, and written out of the history of the music they invented. Basquiat understood this with the clarity of someone who had lived inside the collision of those worlds. He had come up in a downtown New York scene where the lines between musical and visual culture were entirely porous — close to Debbie Harry and Chris Stein of Blondie, who had championed hip hop and graffiti art before either had mainstream recognition, performing with his noise band Gray at the same clubs where the No Wave scene was meeting early hip hop. Music was not background to his work but structural — the bebop model of improvisation within a framework, accumulation over resolution, the individual voice operating against and within the ensemble.

The griot — the West African oral historian and musician whose role was to preserve and transmit cultural memory across generations — sits directly above the bluesman in this image, the lineage drawn explicitly. Basquiat named the figure UNDISCOVERED GENIUS twice, the word GENIUS boxed, the repetition doing what repetition always does in his work — not emphasising but insisting, making visible what the record has chosen not to see.
