Right Clavicle, from the Anatomy portfolio by Jean-Michel Basquiat gives the same bone two views stacked vertically — the front view above, the upper view below, RGT. CLAVICLE written large at the base with a line drawn beneath it like a ruled underline in a notebook. Two drawings of the same bone from different angles, the same logic as the arm seen three ways across the portfolio, the understanding built through rotation rather than any single definitive image.

The clavicle is the most frequently broken bone in the human body — the structure that absorbs impact when a person falls and reaches out to break the fall, taking the force that would otherwise travel to the skull or the spine. It is the bone of first contact with the world, the one that gives way so other things do not. That Basquiat draws it twice, from two angles, and underlines its name with the emphasis of something that needs to be remembered, is the kind of quiet observation that accumulates across the Anatomy portfolio into something larger than any individual print.

The abbreviation RGT. rather than RIGHT is consistent with the portfolio's relationship to the conventions of anatomical labelling — the clinical shorthand of a teaching environment, adopted and slightly loosened, the authority of the format present but worn at the edges. Grey's Anatomy used exactly this kind of abbreviation, and Basquiat absorbed its conventions thoroughly enough to deploy them with the ease of someone for whom they had become a second language, the terminology of the body as familiar as any other part of the vocabulary he had been building since childhood.
