A tall glass of lemon squash becomes the occasion for one of Kusama's most exuberant colour experiments, its surface split between solid yellow polka dots, deep maroon netting, and a crowded lattice of green vines pressing in from every side. The lemon slice balanced on the rim repeats the dot motif at a different scale, its pith and pulp rendered as concentric rings of yellow and maroon that echo the glass below, while the striped straw cuts a single sharp diagonal through all that pattern.

Kusama had spent decades applying her signature accumulation of dots and nets to pumpkins, flowers, and the human body, and by the late 1990s she began turning that same obsessive mark-making toward the everyday objects of a table setting — a glass, a slice of fruit, a straw — treating them with the same intensity she'd once reserved for infinite fields and self-portraiture. The cobbled yellow-and-maroon ground beneath the glass keeps the image tethered to something recognisably domestic even as the pattern threatens to overwhelm the object it describes, a tension between subject and surface that runs through much of her late-1990s print work.
