Pumpkin RY (2004) by Yayoi Kusama features the gourd in red and yellow — a colour pairing in which neither tone recedes, the form and the surface behind it holding equal weight across the entire image. The dots covering the pumpkin graduate from tight clusters along the ribs to larger marks across the widest areas, rendered in red against yellow. They belong at once to the form and to the ground behind it — the pumpkin and the surrounding field built from the same chromatic material, the boundary between object and background kept in flux.

Kusama began her dot paintings in New York in the late 1950s, describing the repetition as a form of self-obliteration — the individual mark dissolved into the system, the self absorbed into the pattern. The pumpkin gave that system an anchor. Rather than the all-over Infinity Net paintings, which extended without limit in every direction, the pumpkin provided a container — a recognisable form that the dots could map and describe whilst still pushing toward dissolution at the edges where the cell-like ground of the background begins.

She has described the pumpkin as the one motif that never loses its grounding quality — stable where other forms in her work tend toward infinite expansion, rooted where they float. In this version that rootedness is tested by the intensity of the colour, the image holding its balance at the edge of something much more volatile.
