Yayoi Kusama's Pumpkin (1983) inverts the colour palettes of the later series — white on red rather than yellow on black, the pumpkin rendered in a pale, almost luminous tone against a saturated crimson ground that fills every corner with a dense organic pattern quite different from the angular field of the subsequent works. The red background here is not the angular fractured network of the 2000s series but a looser, more organic arrangement of curved irregular shapes — closer to a cellular structure than to cracked earth, the forms rounded and packed together across the entire ground. Against it, the white pumpkin stands out with unusual clarity, the dot sequence running from small marks along the narrow outer ribs to large circles down the central section, the pale dots on white giving the form a delicate, almost engraved quality that the high-contrast yellow and red variants do not have.

This is one of the earliest pumpkin prints in Kusama's output, made in 1983, a decade before the motif was consolidated into the large portfolios of the 1990s and 2000s. At this stage the pumpkin was still being tested — the colour combinations not yet codified, the relationship between the form and the background still being worked out. The organic ground here appears in very few other works, suggesting that Kusama was exploring different systems before settling on the geometric broken pattern that would define the later series. She had returned to Japan from New York in 1973 and by 1983 was working with increasing focus on print as a medium for extending her imagery — the screenprint allowing her to fix and circulate images that in painting remained singular and unrepeatable.
