Yayoi Kusama

Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Nets (1953–1985) takes the net structure and renders it in a single saturated yellow — the lines and the ground so close in tone that the image reads at first as a field of pure colour, the irregular polygon structure visible only on closer inspection, the pattern emerging gradually from what initially appears to be a flat monochrome sheet. The date range 1953–1985 is significant — this is not a work made at a single moment but one that spans the full arc of Kusama's development of the net, from its origins in Japan before her departure for New York through to its maturity in her Tokyo studio decades later. The yellow palette connects it to the pumpkin works that were developing across the same period, the colour shared between the two strands of her output as though the same warmth runs through everything she made across those decades.
At close range the irregular polygons are clearly present — lines of a slightly deeper yellow forming the network across a brighter yellow ground, the tonal difference subtle enough that distance collapses the structure entirely, the image becoming again what it appeared to be from across the room — a field of yellow light. This optical behaviour, the pattern that appears and disappears depending on distance and attention, connects to Kusama's account of her hallucinations, in which patterns would consume surfaces and then release them, the world alternating between mark-covered and bare. The 1953 origin places this among the earliest documented moments of the net's development, before New York, before the Brata Gallery exhibition of 1959 that brought her international attention, before the Infinity Mirror Rooms and the global recognition that followed — the net in its most nascent form, already fully itself.
