Yayoi Kusama's Pumpkin (White) (1992) inverts the standard colours of the series entirely — the pumpkin rendered in white on a deep black ground, the dots appearing as black marks on white rather than the reverse, the form almost luminous against the surrounding darkness. The pumpkin here is tall and broad, its three central ribs rising the full height of the image, the dot sequence running from tiny marks along the outermost edges to large bold circles down the central columns — the scale shift more dramatic than in most works in the series, the largest circles substantial and clearly readable from across a room. The white of the pumpkin has an almost photographic quality against the black, the form reading like a negative image, the marks that usually indicate the dark dots on a pale ground here reversed so that the ground shows through as darkness and the form is the light.

The broken pattern of white lines in the black surrounding field is visible but subtle — present at the edges, less insistent than in the yellow and red variants, the image keeping its attention on the pumpkin rather than distributing it equally between form and ground. Kusama has described her relationship with the pumpkin in terms of its constancy — a form she can return to in any colour, any scale, any medium, and find it still there, still itself, still capable of carrying pattern without losing its identity. The white variant tests that constancy more severely than the colour works, the absence of warmth and chromatic contrast requiring the structure of the dots alone to hold the image together — which it does, the form remaining completely legible through mark-making alone.
