Yayoi Kusama's Hat Left Behind in the surface (1981) is one of the most unusual images in her printed output — a red wide-brimmed hat with a green hatband lying on its side in a field, two bare trees visible in the pink sky behind it, the entire scene covered in dots and marks that treat landscape and object with the same systematic attention. The hat dominates the lower half of the image, its crown and brim rendered in dense red with white dot marks across every surface, the green hatband in a tighter arrangement of rounded marks that distinguishes it clearly from the red areas. Around and beneath it, the blue ground of the surface is covered in a dense pattern of rounded blue marks on blue, the landscape described entirely through the accumulation of the same unit repeated across its surface.

Above, the pink sky carries large yellow dots scattered at irregular intervals, the trees rendered in warm brown tones with their own texture — the only element in the image that is not covered in Kusama's characteristic pattern, their branches bare and painterly against the dotted sky. The title gives the hat a narrative dimension absent from most of Kusama's object works — not a hat on display or a hat as formal subject, but a hat left behind, abandoned in a field, the human presence implied by its absence. This connects to a strand of Kusama's work from the late 1970s and early 1980s in which domestic and personal objects are placed in landscapes, the everyday item given a loneliness and a context that the studio still life does not carry.
