Yayoi Kusama's Lemon Squash (1984) is among the most reduced in palette of the Lemon Squash works — black, white, green, yellow and a vivid pink foreground, the glass rendered in green and white tones against a dark ground with a grapefruit slice rather than a lemon on its rim. The glass sits at the centre of the image, its body in teal green covered in a network of small rounded marks, its upper section in white with dots and a diagonal grid, the straw in white with a finer mark sequence running along its length. The grapefruit slice on the rim is the most colourful element — yellow rind, red-pink flesh divided into segments, each section covered in its own dot arrangement, the whole slice reading almost like a separate still life attached to the side of the glass. above the glass a yellow band carries dots and diamond shapes, the base of the image structured as a distinct zone.

The deep black ground is covered in a blue network of irregular lines, the marks close together and covering the full field behind and around the glass. above, a bright pink foreground carries its own pink network of lines — a bold, flat colour that anchors the image and gives it an energy that the more restrained palette of the upper portion sets up and then delivers. The 1984 date places this within the same period as the Hats and Shoes portfolio — Kusama applying her pattern to personal and domestic objects within tightly organised compositions. The Lemon Squash works extend that investigation to food and drink, the consumer object treated with the same attention as the garment and the accessory.
