Still Life with Windmill (C.132) introduced a landscape element into Roy Lichtenstein's Six Still Lifes — a windmill visible through a window, its form rendered in the simplified language of his landscape work, sitting alongside the domestic objects of the interior composition. The inclusion of an external view broke the enclosed space of the conventional still life, opening the composition outward and introducing a spatial complexity absent from the other works in the series.
Roy Lichtenstein had explored the window as a compositional device across multiple series — the boundary between interior and exterior space was a recurring subject in his work of the 1970s, appearing in the Interior Series as well as here. In Still Life with Windmill (C.132), the window served a specifically genre-related function: it connected the still life tradition to the landscape tradition, placing two of Western painting's most codified genres in direct relationship within a single image. The windmill, with its associations with Dutch landscape painting, echoed the Dutch sources that ran through the Six Still Lifes as a whole.
By combining interior and exterior, still life and landscape within a single image, Still Life with Windmill (C.132) was the most formally ambitious work in the series — a print that accumulated the conventions of multiple genres and examined their relationships with the analytical clarity that characterised Lichtenstein's practice at its most assured.
