A Bright Night (C.155) is the most densely packed picture in Roy Lichtenstein's Surrealist Series — a composition in which biomorphic forms, diagonal hatching, a star, an anchor, lips, and architectural fragments crowd the picture plane with an intensity that recalls the compressed nocturnal imagery of Surrealism's most agitated paintings.

The night sky carried specific art-historical weight by the time Lichtenstein turned to it in 1978. Van Gogh's Starry Night had made the nocturne a site of hallucinatory force — the sky alive with swirling energy, stars radiating light with an urgency that had nothing to do with observation and everything to do with emotional pressure. Magritte had inverted the night entirely, painting daytime skies above darkened streets to produce a dislocation that was philosophical rather than atmospheric. Miró had filled his night fields with biomorphic symbols floating in deep blue, the cosmos reimagined as a private cosmology. Lichtenstein's A Bright Night (C.155) absorbed all of these without reproducing any of them — the oxymoronic title announcing from the outset that what followed would refuse the nocturne's usual atmospheric logic.

The title's oxymoronic quality — a bright night — captures the Surrealist tendency toward uncanny combination, the juxtaposition of terms that logic would keep separate. Here the night is rendered not through darkness and tonal gradation but through the same bold diagonal hatching and colour that structures the entire series, the luminosity produced by chromatic contrast and compositional density rather than by any illusion of light. The accumulation of elements — none given priority, all pressing forward simultaneously — is what makes the picture feel nocturnal in a way that has nothing to do with darkness.
