Vertical Apple (C.199) closed Roy Lichtenstein's Seven Apple Woodcut Series with the only vertically formatted work in the group — a single apple form in a tall composition, the shift in orientation giving the familiar subject an unexpected grandeur. Where the horizontal works had adopted the conventional still life format — the table-top view, the object laid out for inspection — the vertical format gave the apple an almost totemic presence, rising through the picture with a scale and centrality the horizontal works had distributed more evenly across the surface.

The blue outline of the apple sits against dense overlapping marks of yellow and red, the form emerging from the accumulated ground rather than sitting on top of it — figure and field sharing the same density of attention in a way that recalled the late Cézanne, whose watercolours had dissolved the boundary between object and surrounding space so thoroughly that the apple and the air around it became equally weighted events. Lichtenstein arrived at a similar integration through entirely different means: the woodcut's physical marks accumulating across the surface without hierarchy, the apple present because the circular outline insists on it, not because the space around it recedes.

Closing the series with a vertical format was characteristic of how Lichtenstein ended serial sequences — introducing a new element at the point of closure rather than summarising what had come before. The Seven Apple Woodcut series had moved through chromatic variation, monochrome reduction, double-fruit pairings, and gestural accumulation; Vertical Apple (C.199) reoriented the whole proposition, asking what the subject looked like when the conventions of still life presentation were set aside and the apple was simply allowed to fill the sheet.
