Grandpa (C.231) was the most characterful work in Roy Lichtenstein's Brushstroke Figures Series — an elderly figure assembled from grey, black, and muted blue marks that communicated age as much through their restraint as through any specific detail. The grey ground absorbed the darker marks around it, the figure emerging from the surface with less separation from its setting than the other works in the series, the whole picture quieter and more inward.

The brushstroke had always carried associations of energy — the mark of the moving hand, paint applied with speed and force. Rendering old age through those marks required a different kind of use: the strokes still physically present but their energy subdued, the gestural vitality working against the gravity of the subject in a way that produced something unexpected. The result — caught before retiring the phrase — was a figure that felt genuinely characterful, the kind of specific human presence that a practice built on generic types rarely achieved. Lichtenstein had spent his career producing images that were recognisable but not individual; Grandpa (C.231) came closer to the individual than almost anything else in the Brushstroke Figures set.

The grey palette placed the work in a different register from the warmer, more energetically coloured works surrounding it — a tonal austerity that matched the subject and gave the series an emotional range it hadn't previously claimed.
