The Living Room (C.250) was the most conventionally composed work in Roy Lichtenstein's Interior Series — a living room arrangement of sofa, chair, plants, and decorative objects rendered with the compositional formality of a furniture catalogue image, the space defined by its furnishings rather than by the architectural container around them. The pink dot-patterned sofa dominated the composition, its scale and placement giving the work a domestic warmth that the cooler, more architecturally defined works in the series had avoided.

The living room was the most socially legible space in the domestic interior — the room designed for display, for the presentation of taste and status, for the reception of visitors. Roy Lichtenstein's treatment acknowledged this social function while stripping it of its warmth: the domestic arrangement, rendered in flat graphic language, was recognisable as a living room but felt entirely uninhabited. The furniture was present without the life that furniture was designed to accommodate.

This sense of the domestic space as a stage set — arranged, represented, waiting for occupation — ran through the Interior Series as a whole. Lichtenstein was examining the visual conventions through which domestic life was represented in popular culture, and those conventions consistently presented the interior as a composed image rather than a lived space. The Living Room (C.250) was the most direct expression of this observation — a room that looked exactly as a living room should look, in which nothing was missing except the people who should have been sitting in it.
