Water Lilies with Willows (C.266) brought the trailing forms of willow fronds into Roy Lichtenstein's Water Lilies Series — the cascading lines descending from above through a field of lily pads and water plants, the swirled stainless steel ground giving the water its familiar optical activity. The willows were a recurrent element in Monet's Giverny imagery, their flowing forms adding a quality of movement and melancholy to the garden's atmosphere that the horizontal lily pads and their reflections could not achieve alone.
Lichtenstein drew the willows as bold vertical strokes — lines descending through the image with his signature Pop-Art method, the atmospheric softness of Monet's trailing fronds replaced by the clean precision of screenprinted enamel. The contrast between the organic subject and the industrial material was, at this point in the series, its most concentrated statement: the natural world as Monet had experienced it in the garden at Giverny, and the natural world as it appeared when processed through the print terms and industrial materials of late twentieth-century printmaking.
The Water Lilies Series was Lichtenstein's last major reckoning with Monet, and Water Lilies with Willows (C.266) reaches the exchange at its most technically ambitious — replacing canvas with stainless steel, oil paint with screenprinted enamel, the atmospheric mark with the swirled industrial surface — finding in that replacement not a dismissal of Monet but a genuine act of looking across time: two different moments in the history of art's relationship with light, water, and the natural world, speaking to each other across a century of radical change.
