The Oval Office (C.277) transforms one of the most symbolically charged interiors in American public life into a sharply controlled Pop image. As the office of the President of the United States, the Oval Office functions not only as a working room, but as a carefully constructed stage for political power, diplomacy and media spectacle — a space associated with televised addresses, international negotiations, moments of national crisis and the projection of American authority across the twentieth century. Roy Lichtenstein reduces this iconic interior to its essential visual elements: symmetrical yellow drapes, deep blue carpet, presidential desk, flags and curved architecture, each rendered through thick black contour and flat, simplified colour. The work reflects Lichtenstein’s longstanding interest in how images become culturally fixed through repetition and mass circulation.

By the time this print was produced, the Oval Office had already become one of the most recognisable interiors in the world, endlessly reproduced through newspapers, television broadcasts and political photography.

Lichtenstein treats the room less as a physical environment than as a graphic construction — an image already embedded within collective visual culture.
