Thinking Nude, State I (C.290) returns to one of the central ideas that runs throughout Roy Lichtenstein’s printmaking: repetition transformed through colour. The work revisits the composition of Thinking Nude in a different chromatic register, altering the mood and visual temperature of the image while leaving the figure itself unchanged.
State variants appeared repeatedly across Lichtenstein’s major print series, from the Haystacks and Cathedrals to the late Nudes. Here, colour becomes the final variable through which the image is reconsidered, allowing atmosphere and tone to shift through palette alone.
As one of the concluding works in the Nudes Series, Thinking Nude, State I functions as a concise demonstration of the serial logic that shaped so much of Lichtenstein’s print practice. The familiar image remains fixed, while colour continuously reshapes the viewer’s experience of it.
