Roy Lichtenstein
16.6 × 21.5 in (mount)
Landscape 4 (C.54) is built on opaque white Rowlux plastic — a material whose smooth, slightly luminous surface gives the image a quality unlike any of the other works in Roy Lichtenstein's Ten Landscapes Series. The screenprint is applied to the Rowlux sheet, the opaque white ground reflecting light back through the printed strokes in a way that gives the work a cool, almost clinical brightness.
The image depicts a stylised sunrise — bold black radiating lines fanning upward from a horizon, the spare reduction complete.
The use of Rowlux plastic as a support was part of Lichtenstein's sustained investigation of industrial and commercial materials throughout the late 1960s. These were materials that carried no fine art history — no lineage in printmaking or painting — and their appearance in the Ten Landscapes was consistent with Pop Art's broader project of refusing the hierarchy of materials that separated fine art from commercial and industrial production.
By printing on plastic, Lichtenstein placed his landscapes on the same material footing as the mass-produced objects that surrounded them in contemporary American life.
