Roy Lichtenstein
16.6 × 21.5 in (mount)
Landscape 6 (C.56) combines screenprint on blue-green moiré Rowlux with a chromogenic photographic print collage — bringing together two of the series' most distinctive material strategies in a single work. The photographic element shows water, its surface set in cool silvery tones, while the moiré Rowlux ground adds shifting reflective effects alongside it. The two surfaces exist in deliberate contrast, the photographic record of actual water set against a material that mimics the appearance of water through optical means.
This doubling — water shown photographically and water evoked materially — gives Landscape 6 (C.56) a self-referential quality that distinguishes it within the series.
The Ten Landscapes were made at a moment when questions about image, medium, and the status of the image were central to advanced art discourse on both sides of the Atlantic. Lichtenstein's series addressed these questions through practical means — through the actual combination of materials and processes, not through statement or manifesto.
