Roy Lichtenstein
20.7 × 30.7 in
The blue and grey palette of Haystack #3 (C.67) places it among the cooler works in Roy Lichtenstein's Haystack Series — a deliberate departure from the warm yellows and reds that Monet had associated with the harvested grain of the Normandy countryside. The haystack form reads clearly against the pale blue ground, its contours defined by lithographic line, its surface structured by the overlapping dot patterns that give the image its mechanical texture. Lichtenstein's decision to work in cool blues was a precise critical gesture. Monet's Haystacks were inseparable from their warm, late-afternoon light — canvases drenched in orange and gold that had come to stand for the Impressionist experience of nature at its most sensory.
Lichtenstein severed the subject from its atmospheric associations and made visible what remained: a shape, a horizon, a system of strokes. The emotional warmth of Impressionism was not a property of the subject but a choice — and choices, Lichtenstein implied, could be made differently.
