Haystack #7 (C.74) is the only relief print in Roy Lichtenstein's Haystack Series — a medium shift that gives it a distinct physical character absent from the lithographs and screenprints that precede it. The relief process yields a surface with an embossed quality, the strokes sitting proud of the paper in a way that adds a tactile dimension to the series' otherwise entirely optical concerns.

By turning to a medium that made the physical process of mark-making visible — that left the evidence of its own production on the surface of the paper — Lichtenstein brought a note that sat in complex relation to the rest of the series. The preceding nine works had been defined by the mechanical regularity of the dot, the suppression of the artist's hand, the insistence on impersonality. Haystack #7 (C.74) restored materiality. This was typical of Lichtenstein's intelligence as an artist.
