Roy Lichtenstein

The final numbered work in the Cathedral Series proper, Cathedral #6 (C.80) sets Rouen's façade in a near-solid field of deep navy — the architectural detail almost entirely absorbed into the dark ground, present only as a subtle tonal variation within the dense dot pattern. Of all the works in the series it is the most extreme in its suppression of the subject, the cathedral reduced to its last legible traces. Lichtenstein's progression through the Cathedral Series follows a loose logic of increasing density and tonal compression. The early works — pale yellow, rose-pink — sit close to legibility; the later ones push toward dissolution. Cathedral #6 (C.80) takes that logic to its limit, yielding a work in which the Impressionist reference is almost entirely consumed by the mechanical surface. What remains is less an image of a cathedral than a field of strokes in which a cathedral is implied.
