Magenta and Green (2002) by Bridget Riley covers the entire picture plane with interlocking flame-edged forms in magenta and acid lime, packed so densely that no part of the field is left unoccupied. The two colours are so close in intensity that neither reads as ground to the other — the eye cannot fix on one as figure and let the other recede, and that instability is what drives the image, the whole field flickering as attention moves across it.

The pairing is deliberately unmediated. Riley introduced colour into her work in 1966, having spent the first half of the decade working exclusively in black and white — a period in which she developed the geometric precision that would underpin everything that followed. When colour arrived, it did so not as decoration or atmosphere but as a structural force, capable of generating the same movement and instability that her early grid and curve paintings had produced through form alone. Magenta and Green takes that logic to one of its most concentrated points: two hues, no transition, no third tone to ease the tension between them, the entire image held at a pitch of chromatic opposition that the eye cannot resolve into rest.

The Magenta portfolio represents Riley working with a reduced palette across a series of two-colour investigations, each pairing testing a different set of chromatic relationships. Against the warmth and complexity of works like About Lilac and the Zig/Rhomboid series, Magenta and Green is something more confrontational — a work that gives the viewer no quarter and asks them to stay with the discomfort of a field that refuses to stabilise.
