Rose (1978) by Bridget Riley is visually close to Untitled (Rose) from the same year — the same Wave structure, the same restrained palette of olive, soft pink and pale blue — but the larger edition of 250 and the single-word title signal a different status within the series, this being the more definitive statement of the chromatic mood that the Untitled variants were exploring in parallel. The distinction is subtle but present in the image: the lines here are slightly more assured in their spacing, the wave a fraction more settled, the whole thing carrying a confidence that the exploratory quality of the Untitled works, for all their delicacy, does not quite match.

Riley's understanding of colour at this point in her career had been shaped by sources that placed her at a considerable distance from the Op Art movement with which her name was still publicly associated. She had read extensively in colour theory — Chevreul, Helmholtz, Albers — but it was the direct experience of colour in Egyptian painting, and her own sustained observation of natural light across her studios in Cornwall and France, that had the deepest effect on the work she made through the 1970s. The Wave series is the most direct product of that influence, the curved line producing a movement through colour that the stripe, for all its precision, could not replicate — something slower and more atmospheric, closer to the experience of light changing than to the immediate perceptual shock of the early black-and-white work.

Rose is among the more accessible works from this period, the larger edition making it available to a broader range of collectors without any reduction in the quality or ambition of the image itself.
