Blue Dominance (1977) by Bridget Riley sets periwinkle blue as the dominant tone across a tall narrow format, the blue bands broader and more frequent than the coral, green and grey that run between them, the whole composition carrying a coolness and spatial openness that the warmer variants in the Dominance series do not share. The generous cream passages between the curving bands give the image a particular lightness — the colours breathing in favour of pressing against one another, the wave slow and unhurried.

The distinction between Blue Dominance and its companion prints lies not in the structure but in what the dominant colour does to the spatial experience of the image. Where Red Dominance advances and Green Dominance holds its ground with a fresh, assertive energy, blue recedes — its natural tendency to pull back from the viewer giving the composition a quality of depth and distance that the warmer works cannot replicate. Riley understood this not as a limitation but as the specific quality blue brings to the set, the three prints together demonstrating that dominance is not simply a matter of frequency or saturation but of the spatial character of the colour itself.
