Deux Oiseaux by Pablo Picasso captures a familiar motif handled with the same directness that defines his late ceramic work. Produced in 1963 at the Madoura pottery in Vallauris in an edition of 150, the plate comes from a period when Picasso had fully absorbed the medium, using it as freely as drawing or print.

Deux Oiseaux is simple but carefully balanced. One dove moves across the upper half of the plate, wings extended, while a second sits below, more compact and grounded. Picasso reduces both to a few confident lines, allowing their forms to remain immediately legible without overworking them. The circular format keeps the movement contained, encouraging the eye to move between the two figures.

The contrast is built through surface and tone. White birds sit against a rich brown engobe, their outlines picked out in dark, fluid strokes with subtle purple accents. The glaze introduces slight variations across the ground, giving the surface depth without disrupting its overall warmth. As with much of Picasso’s ceramic work, the material itself plays an active role, with the texture of the clay remaining visible.

By the early 1960s, Picasso had been working in Vallauris for over fifteen years, developing a highly personal approach to ceramics in collaboration with the Ramié family. The dove had become a recurring image in his work following the post-war years, often associated with peace, but here it feels more immediate—less symbolic, more observational.

The marks beneath the lower bird suggest ground or water, but remain open enough to avoid fixing the setting. This looseness is typical of Picasso’s approach in clay, where suggestion often replaces description and the emphasis stays on rhythm and placement.

Deux Oiseaux shows how little Picasso needed to say. A handful of lines, a controlled palette, and the natural surface of the plate are enough to hold the image. It’s a concise example of how he used ceramics—not as a secondary medium, but as another way of working through line, form and repetition.
