Paysage by Pablo Picasso turns a simple ceramic plate into a compact, atmospheric landscape, built from a few controlled marks and a restrained palette. Produced in 1953 at the Madoura pottery in Vallauris in an edition of 200, the work comes from the early years of Picasso’s engagement with ceramics, when he was testing how far the medium could carry his pictorial ideas.

Paysage is set against a dark, almost charcoal ground, suggesting a night scene. A crescent moon sits in the upper left, with scattered stars marking out the space, while below, a cluster of buildings forms the centre of the image. The architecture is simplified into block-like shapes—compressed, slightly irregular, but clearly rooted in the hillside villages of the South of France that surrounded Picasso during this period.

The handling is direct. White lines pick out edges, rooftops and pathways, while small touches of colour—muted greens, greys and occasional yellow—break the surface just enough to give variation. The marks suggesting ground or vegetation remain loose, allowing the scene to stay open rather than fully described. Around the edge, a series of impressed marks creates a subtle border, holding the composition within the circular format.

At this stage, Picasso had been working in Vallauris for several years, developing a close relationship with the Madoura studio and its processes. Rather than treating the plate as purely decorative, he uses it as a contained image field, adapting his approach to suit the material—working with glaze, slip and surface texture rather than against them.

The subject itself is grounded in place. These simplified buildings and night skies echo the environment Picasso was living in, but they are filtered through a language of reduction and repetition rather than direct observation. This gives the work less a specific view than a constructed memory of landscape.

Paysage shows how naturally Picasso moved between mediums. With minimal means, he holds together space, light and form, using the limitations of the ceramic surface to sharpen rather than limit the image.
