Profil de Jacqueline by Pablo Picasso captures his muse and later wife in one of the earliest phases of her appearance in his work. Produced in 1956 at the Madoura pottery in Vallauris in an edition of 500, the plaque comes from a moment when Picasso was fully engaged with ceramics, using the medium as a direct extension of drawing.

The portrait is held in a simple profile. Jacqueline’s features—elongated nose, heavy eyelid, defined jaw—are reduced to a few confident lines, immediately recognisable within Picasso’s late approach to image-making. Her hair carries much of the work, flowing across the upper half in loose, rhythmic curves that balance the stillness of the face. The image is contained but not static, with line doing most of the work.

The surface is built through contrast. Dark, oxidised paraffin marks sit against a pale green ground, creating a clear separation between figure and field. The lines remain slightly raised, giving the image a physical presence that sits somewhere between drawing and relief. As with much of Picasso’s ceramic work, the material itself is left active rather than disguised.

This period marks the beginning of Jacqueline’s central role in Picasso’s life and work. Having met her at the Madoura studio in the early 1950s, he returned to her image repeatedly, developing a recognisable shorthand that allowed him to move quickly across different mediums. Portraiture becomes less about capturing likeness and more about establishing a form he can continually rework.

The profile format carries a quiet reference to classical portraiture—coins, cameos, medallions—but Picasso keeps it stripped back, avoiding any sense of revival. Instead, the image feels immediate, almost offhand, despite its control.

Profil de Jacqueline shows how naturally Picasso adapted his line to clay. With minimal means, he fixes both the figure and her presence, using the circular format to hold the image tightly while keeping the mark itself open and direct.
