Taureau, Marli aux Feuilles by Pablo Picasso brings together figure and ornament in a tightly controlled ceramic piece, using the plate as both image and object. Made in 1957 at the Madoura pottery in Vallauris in an edition of 500, the piece reveals a point when Picasso was working with complete confidence in the medium.

At the centre, a bull is reduced to a solid, black silhouette, its form held in a few deliberate strokes. The lowered head and compact stance give it weight without overstatement. Around it, a border of stylised leaves runs along the rim, painted in quick, oval forms that expose the underlying clay. The repetition of these shapes creates a steady rhythm, framing the animal while keeping the surface active.

The contrast between the dark figure and the warm terracotta ground does most of the work. Picasso keeps the palette simple, allowing the material to come through rather than covering it. The line remains varied—broad in places, more incisive where details are cut back into the surface—giving the image both clarity and texture.

A few years into his Vallauris period, Picasso was drawing more directly on Mediterranean and Iberian sources, but without settling into pastiche. The combination of bold silhouette and decorative border echoes older ceramic traditions, while the handling stays unmistakably his—quick, reduced, and slightly uneven in a way that keeps the image alive.

The bull, a constant in his work, is handled here without drama. The emphasis shifts away from confrontation towards presence, with the figure sitting comfortably within the decorative field rather than breaking it.

Taureau, Marli aux Feuilles holds together through that balance. The central form and surrounding pattern work in tandem, with the circular format keeping everything contained. Nothing is overworked—the image resolves through contrast, repetition and the natural surface of the clay.
