Visage No. 197 by Pablo Picasso turns the face into a quick, expressive construction, built directly onto the surface of a ceramic plate. Made in 1963 at the Madoura pottery in Vallauris in an edition of 500, this work reveals a stage where Picasso was working with complete ease in clay, using it as freely as drawing.

The face fills almost the entire plate. Features are deliberately uneven—one eye built from concentric circles, the other sharper and more angular—held together by a long, triangular nose and a curved, off-centre mouth. The imbalance feels intentional, giving the image a sense of movement rather than fixing it into symmetry.

The colour is kept spare but effective. Black defines the face, while small accents of blue and green sit across the surface—on the cheek, near the head, beneath the mouth—breaking the monochrome just enough to keep the work active. The brushwork remains visible throughout, with variations in pressure and thickness adding to the vitality.

By the early 1960s, Picasso had been working in Vallauris for over fifteen years, developing a way of using ceramics that prioritised speed and directness. Faces like this appear repeatedly across his late work, not as portraits in a traditional sense, but as variations on a theme—something to be reworked and pushed in different directions.

The circular format acts as a natural frame, keeping everything contained while allowing the features to press outward. There’s no background as such, just the raw surface of the plate holding the image in place.

Visage No. 197 comes together through that balance of control and looseness. A few lines, a handful of colour, and the surface of the clay are enough to carry the image, with nothing overdefined or fixed.
