Visage Gravé by Pablo Picasso reduces the face to a set of direct, almost instinctive marks, worked into the surface of an oval ceramic platter. Made in 1948 at the Madoura pottery in Vallauris in an edition of 200, the image sits within the early phase of Picasso’s ceramic work, when he was testing how drawing could translate into clay.
The face sits frontally within the oval format, its features held in a few confident lines. Arched brows, circular eyes, a small triangular nose and a curved mouth are all defined with minimal effort, yet remain immediately readable. The engraving beneath the glaze adds a second layer, catching light and creating slight shifts in tone that give the image a quiet depth.
Colour is kept simple but effective. Blue engobe carries the line, set against a warm yellow ground that gives the surface a soft, earthen quality. A darker blue border runs around the edge, punctuated by oval marks that introduce a steady rhythm.
At this point, Picasso had only recently begun working in Vallauris, but was already adapting quickly to the medium. The combination of incision and glaze allowed him to keep the directness of touch of drawing while engaging with the physical qualities of clay—weight, texture, and surface.
The oval format works naturally with the subject. The shape of the platter mirrors the head, allowing the image to sit comfortably within it without feeling imposed. There’s no background as such, just the surface of the clay holding the form.
Visage Gravé comes together through that simplicity. A few lines, a limited palette, and the material itself are enough to fix the image, with nothing overworked or overstated.
