Françoise Sur Fond Gris is a lithograph executed by Pablo Picasso in 1950, printed on grey-blue laid Ingres Canson paper — a support whose cool, textured ground is integral to the work's effect, the tooth of the Ingres paper giving the lithographic crayon a particular richness and depth, and the grey-blue tone merging with the dark background to create an atmosphere of unusual intensity.
The subject is Françoise Gilot, the painter who had become Picasso's companion in 1943 and with whom he would have two children, Claude and Paloma. By 1950 their relationship, though beginning to fracture, was still the dominant emotional fact of his life, and Françoise remained his primary subject across painting, drawing and printmaking throughout the late 1940s and early 1950s. Where many of his portraits of her from this period are luminous and celebratory — the famous Femme-Fleur of 1946 presenting her as a radiant, almost mythological figure — Françoise Sur Fond Gris takes a markedly different tone. The piece is intimate and psychologically charged: the figure seated, chin resting on her raised hand, her gaze directed outward with an expression that resists easy reading — watchful, interior, neither fully present nor fully withdrawn.
The lithographic technique here is handled with exceptional command. Picasso works the stone with crayon and wash to build a tonal range that moves from the dense black of the background through the mid-greys of the figure's clothing and hair to the stark white illumination of the face and hand. The Cubist displacement of the eyes — each described individually, set at a slight angle to one another across the broad plane of the forehead — is subtle enough not to disrupt the portrait's legibility, but insistent enough to remind the viewer that this is an image constructed as much as observed. It is one of the most compelling portraits of Picasso's middle period: a work in which technical mastery and psychological acuity are held in precise balance.
