Tête de Femme III: Portrait of Dora Maar is a colour aquatint executed by Pablo Picasso in 1939, at one of the most turbulent and creatively charged moments of his career. The work is unsigned and unnumbered, consistent with a number of Picasso's printmaking projects of this period that were not formally editioned for commercial distribution during his lifetime but have since been authenticated and catalogued within his graphic œuvre.

The subject is Dora Maar — the Surrealist photographer and painter who had been Picasso's companion since 1936 and who remained one of his most important muses through the years of the Second World War. Maar occupied a singular place in Picasso's iconography of this period: where Marie-Thérèse Walter, his concurrent companion, tended to appear in his work as a figure of sensuous calm, Maar was repeatedly depicted as a woman in states of emotional extremity — most famously in the Weeping Woman series of 1937, produced in the immediate aftermath of Guernica, in which her features became a vehicle for Picasso's broader meditation on grief and suffering. Tête de Femme III belongs to a more restrained register, but the intensity of the scrutiny is unmistakable. The face is presented in near-frontal view, her dark hair falling to the shoulders, the gaze level and self-possessed — a portrait that acknowledges the sitter's own considerable intelligence and force of personality.

The aquatint technique allows a tonal richness and chromatic complexity unusual in Picasso's prints of this period. The hatched grey ground, the warm flesh tones of the face, the deep burgundy of the lips and the striped whites of the collar are built up through successive acid bites and hand colouring, giving the surface a density and material presence that sets the work apart from his lithographs and linocuts. Produced at the outbreak of war, Tête de Femme III carries the weight of its moment — a portrait of a specific woman rendered with a precision and psychological gravity that transcends the merely documentary.
