Jacqueline Lisant by Pablo Picasso presents an intimate study of concentrated absorption, capturing Jacqueline Roque in a moment of quiet reading. Executed in 1957 as a trial proof outside the edition, this lithograph on Arches wove paper shows clearly Picasso's command of the medium's tonal possibilities whilst revealing his deep observation of his partner's contemplative nature.

The work depicts Jacqueline seated with her head resting thoughtfully against her raised hand, eyes cast downward towards an open book. Picasso employs the full range of lithographic techniques to model her features, using dense cross-hatching to create the dramatic shadows that define her face and flowing hair. The interplay between the stark white highlights on her forehead and cheekbones and the rich blacks of her hair creates a sculptural quality that emphasises the three-dimensional form beneath the surface patterns.

This lithograph belongs to a period when Picasso was exploring portraiture with renewed intensity following his relationship with Jacqueline, whom he had met in 1952 and would marry in 1961. The 1950s marked a return to more representational approaches in his work, though always filtered through his distinctive manner of working. Here, the simplified linear treatment of her clothing contrasts with the complex modelling of her face, creating a hierarchy that draws attention to her expression of absorbed concentration.

Jacqueline Lisant 's psychological intimacy reflects both Picasso's personal connection to his subject and his ability to capture the universal act of reading as a moment of private reflection. The downward gaze and supporting hand suggest both the physical weight of thought and the mental engagement with text. Jacqueline's serene expression, rendered through confident lithographic strokes, conveys a sense of intellectual pleasure rather than mere study.

The technical execution reveals Picasso's mastery of lithography's unique properties. The medium's capacity for both bold statements and subtle tonal gradations allows him to create passages of extraordinary delicacy alongside areas of stark contrast. The signed trial proof status of this impression makes it particularly significant, representing the artist's direct involvement in the printing process and his satisfaction with this particular realisation of Jacqueline Lisant.
