Jacqueline au chapeau à Fleurs. I by Pablo Picasso presents an intimate portrait of his final muse and wife, Jacqueline Roque, rendered through the bold vocabulary of linocut. Created in 1962 as part of an edition of 50, the work captures Jacqueline wearing an elaborate floral hat, her features distilled into the simplified yet expressive formal handling that defined Picasso's later printmaking.

The piece lays bare the artist's mastery of the linocut medium, exploiting its capacity for bold contrasts and clean lines. Against the deep black ground, golden-yellow contours define Jacqueline's profile and the ornate details of her hat, creating a striking interplay between positive and negative space. The floral motifs adorning her headwear are rendered with decorative flourishes that recall both Spanish mantilla traditions and the ornamental exuberance of Art Nouveau, whilst the simplified facial features maintain the geometric clarity of Picasso's Cubist heritage.

By 1962, Jacqueline Roque had become the dominant subject of Picasso's art, appearing in hundreds of paintings, drawings, and prints throughout their relationship. Their marriage earlier that year marked a period of renewed creative energy for the artist, then aged eighty-one. The Jacqueline series of linocuts, to which this work belongs, represents one of his most concentrated explorations of portraiture through printmaking, demonstrating how the medium's technical constraints could generate new expressive possibilities.

Jacqueline au chapeau à Fleurs’s direct gaze establishes an immediate psychological presence, whilst the decorative elements of the hat create a sense of ceremonial grandeur. Picasso's treatment of Jacqueline's hair, flowing in sinuous curves that echo the floral patterns above, unifies the portrait's various elements within a cohesive visual rhythm. The artist's use of line varies from the bold contours that define the face to the more delicate detailing of individual flowers and leaves.

Jacqueline au chapeau à Fleurs. I exemplifies how Picasso's late printmaking combined technical innovation with deeply personal subject matter. The work's bold impact and intimate portrayal reveal the artist's ability to distil decades of formal experimentation into images of striking aliveness, creating a portrait that functions both as loving tribute and sophisticated artistic statement.
