Nature Morte Au Verre Sous La Lampe by Pablo Picasso stages a bold domestic interior where artificial light transforms everyday objects into a dramatic nocturnal tableau. Created in 1962 as a linocut printed in yellow, red, green, and black on Arches paper in an edition of 50, the work captures the artist's fascination with the interplay between illumination and shadow within the confines of his studio space.

The scene focuses on a hanging lamp that casts its glow across a table laden with vessels and fruit, creating zones of intense colour that pulse against deep black shadows. Picasso employs the lamp's radiance as both literal light source and compositional anchor, with bold red and green forms radiating outward in flame-like patterns. The yellow lamp shade itself becomes a focal point, its warm hue contrasting sharply with the surrounding darkness and establishing the chromatic hierarchy that governs the entire scene.

By 1962, Picasso had fully embraced linocut as his preferred printmaking medium, drawn to its capacity for bold colour separation and aliveness. The technique allowed him to achieve the stark contrasts visible here, where areas of pure colour meet without gradation or subtle transition. The red forms appear to glow with their own internal heat, whilst the green elements provide visual weight and balance across the horizontal plane of the table.

The still life objects themselves—a glass, various vessels, and scattered fruit—are rendered through Picasso's distinctive formal devices of the period. The glass on the left bears geometric patterning that recalls his earlier Cubist innovations, yet here serves a more decorative function within the overall domestic harmony. The fruits appear as simplified ovoid forms in red and black, their surfaces catching and reflecting the overhead illumination.

The image indicates the artist's return to printmaking with renewed vigour during his final decades, when he produced some of his most vibrant and technically accomplished works. The domestic subject matter speaks to Picasso's contentment at his villa in Mougins, where simple meals and quiet evenings provided endless source material for artistic exploration.
