Le Repas Frugal by Pablo Picasso depicts two emaciated figures seated at a sparse table, their gaunt forms rendered with the haunting psychological intensity that marked his Blue Period explorations of human suffering. From an edition of 250, the work remains one of the artist's most accomplished early etchings, demonstrating his command of the medium's capacity for both delicate line work and emotional weight.

Le Repas Frugal turns on a couple whose skeletal frames speak to the poverty and desperation that Picasso witnessed during his formative years in Paris. The man, wearing a battered hat, turns his hollow-eyed gaze toward the viewer whilst his companion, bare-shouldered and wraithlike, rests her chin on her hand in a gesture of weary resignation. Between them lies a meagre meal—a bottle of wine, a piece of bread, and what appears to be a bowl—the "frugal repast" that gives the work its title.

Executed in 1904 during Picasso's residence in the Bateau-Lavoir, Le Repas Frugal reflects the artist's direct experience of bohemian life in Montmartre, where he observed the destitute and marginalised with both compassion and clarity. The etching technique allows for subtlety in the rendering of flesh and fabric, with Picasso employing varying line weights to model the figures' anatomy whilst using cross-hatching to create the work's atmosphere.

The psychological tension between the two figures—the man's direct engagement with the viewer contrasted with the woman's introspective withdrawal—points to Picasso's early interest in human relationships under strain. Their positioning, whilst physically close, suggests emotional distance, a theme that would recur throughout his career. The neutral tones of the etching on laid Arches paper reinforce the work's sombre mood, stripping away any distraction from the scene.

Le Repas Frugal marks an important stage in Picasso's development as a printmaker, showing a level of technical control that carries through into his later work. The piece illustrates how the artist translated lived experience into a broader reflection on poverty and isolation, establishing concerns that would continue to surface across his career.
