Portrait de Jacqueline Accoudée by Pablo Picasso locates the artist's beloved companion in a moment of contemplative repose, her elbow supporting her head in a classic pose of reflection. Executed in 1959 as a linocut in black and cream on Arches paper in an edition of fifty, the work captures Jacqueline Roque during the period when she had become Picasso's primary model and muse, shortly before their marriage in 1961.

Portrait de Jacqueline Accoudée opens on Jacqueline in both profile and three-quarter view simultaneously, employing the approach of Cubism that Picasso had refined over decades. Her face is divided into geometric planes, with one eye rendered frontally whilst the other appears in profile, creating the psychological depth and visual complexity that defined his mature portraiture. The linear quality of the linocut medium allows for bold, decisive marks that emphasise the structural elements of her features—the strong cheekbones, the elegant curve of her neck, and the distinctive shape of her eyes that appeared repeatedly in Picasso's work from this period.

Behind Jacqueline's figure, Picasso includes a decorative pattern of triangular motifs that suggest the Moorish influences present in their villa La Californie in Cannes, where much of his late work was created. This geometric backdrop serves both as formal contrast to the curved lines of the figure and as cultural reference to the Mediterranean environment that shaped their daily life. The interplay between the patterned surface and the flowing contours of Jacqueline's form underlines Picasso's ability to balance decorative and representational elements.

The monochromatic palette of black ink on cream paper lends Portrait de Jacqueline Accoudée an intimate quality, focusing attention on the essential lines that define both her physical presence and emotional state. The linocut technique, which Picasso had embraced with renewed enthusiasm in the 1950s, allowed him to work with immediate, sculptural cuts that mirror the directness of his approach to portraying Jacqueline. The medium's inherent boldness suits the confident handling of form that characterises this portrait, where every line serves to build both likeness and psychological presence.

Through its combination of technical mastery and personal affection, Portrait de Jacqueline Accoudée confirms both Picasso's printmaking achievements and his deep connection to his final companion, whose serene expression and graceful pose embody the contentment of their shared years together.
