Jacqueline with Roses by Pablo Picasso frames his final muse in a moment of quiet contemplation, executed as a colour lithograph in an edition of fifty during 1956. The work examines Jacqueline Roque in profile, her distinctive features rendered with the confident linear economy that marked Picasso's mature work. Against a brilliant azure background, her pale complexion and elegantly elongated neck create a striking contrast, while dark hair frames her classical profile in bold, rhythmic strokes.

Jacqueline with Roses balances figuration with decorative elements that speak to Picasso's lifelong dialogue with historical art forms. Jacqueline's costume displays an intricate patterned bodice in warm oranges and golds, its ornamental motifs suggesting the Moorish influences that permeated his work following decades in southern France. A delicate spray of roses extends into the upper portion of the image, their pink blooms and verdant leaves providing a naturalistic counterpoint to the geometric precision of the figure's treatment.

This lithograph belongs to a concentrated period when Picasso was exploring new possibilities in printmaking, working closely with master printer Fernand Mourlot at his Parisian atelier. The medium allowed him to achieve both bold colour saturation and subtle tonal gradations, evident in the smooth transitions across Jacqueline's face and the vibrant intensity of the background blue. Technical mastery serves expressive purpose, as the flattened pictorial space and selective colour palette create an almost icon-like quality.

Jacqueline Roque had entered Picasso's life in 1953, becoming both companion and primary subject matter during his final decades. Her presence in his work coincided with a renewed engagement with classical themes and portraiture, moving away from the fragmented forms of earlier periods toward a more direct, though still distinctly modern, approach to representation. The roses in this work may reference both the traditional association of flowers with feminine beauty and the garden at their villa La Californie in Cannes.

Jacqueline with Roses evidences Picasso's ability to bring together decorative richness with psychological presence, presenting his subject as both individual and archetype. The work's formal restraint and chromatic boldness create an image that functions simultaneously as intimate portrait and broader meditation on beauty, rendered through the distinctive handling of form that defined his approach to the human figure throughout his career.
