Jeu de la Cape is a lithograph executed by Pablo Picasso on 6 March 1961 — the date inscribed in his hand in the lower left margin — and belongs to the extended series of bullfighting subjects that runs as a continuous thread through his work from his earliest years in Barcelona to the very end of his life. Unsigned, the work retains the quality of a private notation, the dated inscription functioning as both authentication and diary entry.

The corrida was for Picasso not merely a spectacle but a primal drama — one rooted in his Andalusian childhood and carrying associations of danger, grace, sacrifice and the relationship between man and animal that he found endlessly compelling as both subject and metaphor. He attended bullfights throughout his life and produced thousands of works on the theme across every medium, from the early academic paintings of the 1890s through the charged prints of the Vollard Suite and the ceramics of the Vallauris years.

Jeu de la Cape — the play of the cape — captures a moment of the passes in which the matador manoeuvres the bull with his cape, the two figures locked in a relationship of mutual attention and risk. The lithograph is handled with deliberate sketchiness, the crayon marks rapid and gestural, the scene contained within a loose rectangular border as though viewed through the railings of the arena. At the right, the dark mass of a horse and the watching figure of a picador establish spatial depth and the wider context of the ring. The economy of the image is entirely intentional — Picasso had been distilling the corrida to its essential elements for decades, and by 1961 a few strokes of lithographic crayon were sufficient to conjure the heat, dust and tension of the arena with complete conviction.
