L'Aubade, avec Femme Accoudée (Aubade, with a Woman in an Armchair) by Pablo Picasso places two female figures within an intimate domestic interior, executed in the artist's distinctive linocut technique from 1959. This work, from an edition of fifty with twenty artist's proofs, explores the aubade theme—the traditional dawn song marking the departure of lovers at daybreak—through Picasso's mature pictorial approach of the late 1950s.
The image turns on a reclining nude whose simplified, flowing contours dominate the left portion of the image, while a second woman sits in an armchair to the right, her form built through intricate linear patterns that cascade across her body and clothing. Picasso employs a warm palette of terracotta browns and soft pinks against darker accents, creating an atmosphere of morning light filtering through the domestic space. His control of the linocut medium is evident in the balance between solid colour and fine line, particularly in the treatment of the seated figure's patterned dress.
This period opened Picasso's intensive engagement with linocut, working closely with master printer Hidalgo Arnéra in Vallauris. The medium allowed him to achieve bold effects while maintaining the directness of touch of drawing. The domestic setting reflects his life at Villa La Californie in Cannes, where he lived with Jacqueline Roque, and shows how he reworked classical themes through a more direct formal method.
The interior is suggested through a few elements—bookshelves, framed images, and geometric flooring—which hold the figures within a defined space. The reclining nude points back to art historical precedents, while the seated figure introduces a denser, more decorative surface treatment that became increasingly prominent in his later work.
